About the Society
While EngSoc's membership is primarily English majors, it is not exclusive. We are open to literary-minded students of all majors and disciplines. There are no dues and invite we everyone to come to our open events!
The UI English Society's mission is:
- To provide a space for literary minded people to share their love of literature and creative writing
- To strengthen connections between literary groups on campus and the literary community of IC
- To foster relationships between students and faculty
- To create a greater sense of connectedness between English majors
We host a variety of events throughout the academic year, including:
- Social events: games, crafts, trivia, holiday parties, etc.
- Educational events: study sessions, Inspiration Series faculty talks, etc.
- Literary events: open mics, readings, workshops, etc.
- Charity fundraising
- And much more!
"My name is Kate and I am going to be the Event Manager this year! I’m majoring in creative writing and anthropology, with a certificate in museum studies. I tend to stress bake completely randomized dessert items, like egg custard, pancake bread, lemon-lavender shortbread, cornbread, and chocolate chip cookies. A book I can recommend at the moment is ‘Lovecraft Country.’ Feel free to contact me if you want to talk about how amazing alpaca farms and/or primates are. Let's see where online events take us this year!"
"Hi! I'm John and I'll be the president of the English Society in the Fall. I've been with the English Society since I first ran into them at my very first Student Org Fair at Hubbard Park back in 2017, and it's been such a privilege to have been a part of this group since then. I'm so excited for next year!"
"Scott Magnuson is excited to be returning for another year as the English Society's publicist! He's looking forward to connecting with EngSoc members through new events, whether online or in-person. He'll be a senior this fall. Scott studies political science and is also a student in the UI School of Music, where he plays organ. Though he is not an English major, he enjoys attending readings around Iowa City and other events put on by literary orgs on campus. Scott is often in Main Library, for the mac 'n' cheese as much as for the books!"
"Hello everybody! My name is Evalyn Harper and I'm super excited to be joining the English Society officers as a member of the Marketing and Outreach Team! Next semester I'll be starting my second year at the University of Iowa studying English and creative writing on a publishing track. I'm an avid reader/writer of fiction and I'mparticularly interested in creating inclusive storytelling for children and teens. Outside of my literary pursuits, I've been known to enjoy video editing, attempting to play the ukulele, and any and all things Disney.
"Hi everyone! I'm Jenny and I'm the new social media chair for the English Society. I'm an avid reader and writer who loves to listen to any music that comes out of a jukebox (especially Sir Elton John). I talk constantly about the little zoo in my house: my two cats, my rat, and my hedgehog. I take my Lipton tea with milk and sugar and I think that's the only correct way to take Lipton tea. "I'm excited to be an officer for the English Society and to bring joy to all of the literature and writing lovers across campus!
"Hello, my name is Shalini (rhymes with Colony). I'm an English and Creative Writing and Secondary Education major and I'm the new Education Chair for English Society! When I'm not thinking about English Education, diverse literature, and becoming the next Secretary of Education, I like to play my saxophone and sing in Sigma Alpha Iota. I have an interesting obsession with mustard, worms, and pickles. I'm really excited to be a part of the English Society this upcoming year and I'm excited to meet all our new members soon."
