Scott Magnuson

"Scott Magnuson is excited to be returning for another year as the English Society's publicist! He's looking forward to connecting with EngSoc members through new events, whether online or in-person. He'll be a senior this fall. Scott studies political science and is also a student in the UI School of Music, where he plays organ. Though he is not an English major, he enjoys attending readings around Iowa City and other events put on by literary orgs on campus. Scott is often in Main Library, for the mac 'n' cheese as much as for the books!"

John Lyons

"Hi! I'm John and I'll be the president of the English Society in the Fall. I've been with the English Society since I first ran into them at my very first Student Org Fair at Hubbard Park back in 2017, and it's been such a privilege to have been a part of this group since then. I'm so excited for next year!"

Zoie Schares

Zoie is the publicity chair of the English Society. In other words, she lives vicariously through Facebook and Twitter when her nose isn't buried in a book. She's a senior at the University of Iowa, and will probably cry if you ask her about it because she's not ready to adult just yet. Eventually, she hopes to work for the University of Iowa as an academic coordinator because you CAN do more with an English Degree than teach. In her free time (which is seldom) she's a big fan of binge watching TV and cuddling with dogs.

Wendy Lee

Wendy Lee, the Treasurer of the English Society is also a penultimate year student majoring in English and Creative Writing. Her hometown is on the other side of the world in Southeast Asia—Singapore. This past summer she interned at the International Writing Program and is currently working at Hancher Auditorium as an Usher. A hardcore travel addict, Wendy spends most of her time planning on her next adventure. Apart from traveling, she enjoys meeting people from all walks of life and occasionally a run.

Caitlyn Winkler

Caitlyn is one of the Service/Writing Chairs for the English Society. She is a senior English major here at Iowa. Her dream job would involve writing and bossing people around. When not reading or writing, her favorite thing to do is curl up with her laptop and look up kitchen renovations on Pinterest. Caitlyn has the cutest one-year-old son in the world (she even included a picture of him to prove it) and loves to go on long walks around campus with her family.

Melissa Lauer

Melissa Lauer is terrible at writing bios. She is also a sophomore at the University of Iowa and, as of spring 2016, the secretary of the English Society. She is currently majoring in Studio Arts and English and Creative Writing, minoring in History, and working as both a writing fellow and an apprentice book-healer in the Main Library’s Conservation Lab. Melissa spends her time consuming stories of all forms, photographing abandoned places, and wandering about – usually thanks to her horrible sense of direction.
