Doc Johnline Open Mic

We're moving our annual end-of-the-year open mic to the digital realm! Join us Friday May 8 at 7pm for our "Doc John" open mic, now rechristened the "Doc Johnline."

You can sign up to read in advance here, but "walk-ins" are always welcome.

The Doc John, now in its fourth year, is named after Dr. Samuel Johnson, renowned 18th century English poet, playwright, essayist, lexicographer, and biographer. You might recognize him from his portrait to the right. Dr. Johnson was an early champion of individual expression through literature. He believed in the importance of all parts of a person to their biography: that the highs and lows, the appealing and unappealing, the trivial as well as the significant, should all be represented in our lives and art. It's in the spirit of this kind of expansive biography that we present the Doc John. 

So we invite all your work: your poetry, essays, fiction, music, comedy, drama: pieces that bend genre, or defy it all together. Even though we're far apart—perhaps because we're so far apart—it's important to share the depth that each of us contains, to connect with one another across our various biographies. Whether it's a poem you wrote just yesterday for #escapril, or a piece you've held close for a long time, join us May 8 to share it!
